Seventy-six international rights organisations yesterday known as on the United Arab Emirates to launch human rights defenders and activists.
In a letter addressed to UAE ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, the organisations stated: “Approaching ten years behind bars, the group of pro-democracy advocates, referred to as the “UAE 94″, stay unjustly jailed for signing a web-based petition calling for political reform in 2011. Following a grossly unfair mass trial, 69 members of the UAE 94 have been sentenced to between seven and 15 years, together with eight in absentia.”
They went on to “name on the UAE authorities to adjust to worldwide requirements for prisoners, together with by permitting common household visits, entry to healthcare and common consultations with their attorneys, and ending the follow of holding them in solitary confinement.”
The decision comes because the UAE launches Dubai Expo 2020, which can proceed for six months. The rights teams urged the Emirates to launch the activists in the course of the Expo with the intention to “show their dedication” to its motto “Connecting Minds and Creating the Future by means of sustainability, mobility and alternative”.
The letter was signed by 76 organisations together with Motion by Christians in opposition to Torture (ACAT), Worldwide Marketing campaign for Freedom within the United Arab Emirates (ICFUAE), ALQST for Human Rights, Amnesty Worldwide, FIDH, throughout the framework of the Observatory for the Safety of Human Rights Defenders and Human Rights Watch (HRW).
